Kumaon Village Trek! (6 Nights - 7 Days)


Kalamatia Sangam - Chittai - Binsar - Deora - Paliu - Jawalbanj - Jageshwar Temples

The concept of the "Village Trek" is unique as it provides an insight into the lives and daily routine of the Kumaoni villagers and experience their warm and genuine hospitality. The accommodation is rustic but clean and has all the basic amenities. The village houses have been comfortably renovated, toilets and bathrooms added without spoiling the ambience.

After a day's walk you can freshen up with a hot bucket bath. Food is cooked hygienically and mineral water is provided.

Kali-mat Kumaon Village Trek is a six nights, seven days walking itinerary which gives you an opportunity to discover Kumaon. The itinerary begins with two over nights at Kalmatia Sangam with treks during the day. The first two days helps you to adjust to the altitude and also familiarises you with the area. There after 3 nights are spent treking from one village ( Deora ) to the second ( Paliu ) and then on to the third (Jwalbhanj ) with overnight in the village homes. The last night ( the 6th night or last night of your holiday with us) is back again at Kalmatia Sangam to relax and unwind before travelling to your next destination.
Day 1 : Arrive at Kalmatia Sangam. Day Trek to Chittai
Drive 8-9 hours to Kalmatia Sangam from Delhi or take the overnight Ranikhet Express from Delhi to Kathgodam.
For those arriving by road from Delhi or any other destination , late afternoon is at leisure. For the others this Days walk is from Kalmatia Sangam to Chittai Temple.

By Train upto Kathgodam : Guests arriving by train will be able to reach the resort by 9.30 Am. After breakfast start an easy walk to Chittai.
The Chittai bell temple is dedicated to Golu Devta, the god of justice revered by the Kumaonis. The temple is hung with petitions and bells of all shapes and sizes brought by grateful devotees. The walking path starts from the resort through Chir (pine) forests via Sintola with good views of the valley and Himalayas. After temple visit walk back to the resort.

Distance : 10 kms Altitude : 1950m - 1700m

Walking time to Chittai and back : 4 / 5hrs.

Overnight : Kalmatia Sangam.
Day 2 : Kalmatia Sangam : Day Trek to Binsar.
For guests who arrive by car the previous afternoon - Chittai Temple Walk ( as above )
For those who arrived by train the previous day - Binsar Sanctuary Walk
After breakfast, drive to Binsar and Walk up to Zero Point through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Enjoy the view and hike downhill upto the Shiva temple. Trek further downhill and then follow the western Binsar ridge towards Kangarchina. This is a very scenic walk with good views of the Himalayas on one side and terraced valley on the other.  Enroute stop for packed lunch from Kalmatia. Drive back to resort.

Altitudes on this trek ranges from from  2400m - 1700m.

Walking time : 5hrs  to 6hrs. Driving time  : 2hrs.

Day 3 : Kalmatia Sangam: Day Trek to Deora Village with Overnight Stay At Deora.

The village walk leads you through picturesque villages,  terraced fields, waterfalls, seasonal streams and pine, cedar, oak and rhododendron forests. Mid February to April is when the rhododendron flowers are in bloom.  The walks vary from gentle to slightly steep and take you between altitudes 1450m to 2250m.
Walking on the old village trails you pass through several villages, where the houses have wonderfully carved doors and windows. This itinerary gives you a glimpse into of life of the local Kumaoni folk, where the traditions and culture are still a part of their daily lives. You pass villages where the castes are strictly segregated, walk through terraced fields that still follow traditional channel irrigation systems. 
Every where in  Kumaon you will come accross people who are friendly, simple, happy to interact with visitors and smile for photographs. While on the walks you will visit ancient Kali, Vishnu and Shakti temples dating back to almost a 1000 years.  You will also get to see ancient flour mills  that are still operational and used by the Kumaoni hill folk.  The Himalayan peaks and valleys offer magnificient backdrops all along the trek, their breath-taking beauty does not allow you to feel any fatigue inspite of walking nearly 5 hours at a stretch.

Overnight Stay: Village Deora

Day 4 : Deora Village: Day Trek to Paliu Village with Overnight stay at Paliu

On  arrivial at the village you freshen up and enjoy a welcome drink while traditional Kumaoni food is cooked by the villagers.  The landlord while preparing the dinner,  hops in and out of his fields to get fresh vegetables and herbs for your meal.  Guests are welcome to watch and help! Relax, chat with the locals listening to local tales .

Overnight Stay : Paliu Village
Day 5 : Paliu Village: Day Trek to Jawalbanj Village with overnight stay at Jawalbanj.

On the last evening of your village stay, traditional Kumaoni folk dances and music are organised around a bonfire. The music and the lilting kumaoni folk songs and the light footed langurous dancing under the stars is a mesmerising experience.

Walking Time: 5 Hours approximately

Overnight Stay: Jawalbanj village

Day 6 : Jageshwar Temples and Return to Kalmatia Sangam

Walk downhill to Jageshwar through terraced fields, villages and magnificent cedar forests. At Jageshwar you can visit the ancient temple complex built by the Chand and Katyuri rulers between 8th. and 12th. Century AD.
An hour and a half’s  drive back to Kalmatia Sangam Himalaya Resort.  Enroute stop to see the prehistoric rock art at Lakhudiar.

Overnight : Kalmatia Sangam 
Day 7 : Return to Delhi or next destination
